The Hunt for Red October is a book about the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR). The Hunt for Red October ends with the United States blowing up a decoy submarine and told USSR that was the Red October. The U.S. ended up with the Red October in their possession without having to kill any of the crew members of the Red October. I know you are probably wondering, why does The Hunt for Red October matter? This book matters today because it shows what the relationship between USSR and the U.S. was like during the Cold War era. It also shows that there is always to get what you want without resulting to violence. This relates to modern day America because in schools all over America, kids get in fights on a daily basis. Their is a better way to get what you want or settle a conflict, by talking it out or finding some agreement to stop violence before it starts.

In the Hunt for Red October, the CIA is currently trying to get the Red October (a Russian missile ship). They have Jack Ryan, the protagonist, has come up with a plan to take over the Red October and bring it to America and use it as they see fit. But the thing is that the CIA and the president (in the book) only want the Red October because they don't want the Soviet Union to have it. They want to make sure whatever is on that ship cannot be used against them if a war actually breaks out because their was so much tension between the United States, the Soviet Union, and other countries during this time. Currently, the United States and Russia have been experiencing some tension especially since Donald Trump has become our president. The U.S. trying to isolate Russia which might push Russia to an alliance with China. Recently, Russia and Ukraine have started to really dislike each other. Ukraine is currently in the process of building a wall around it's border with Russia because they hate them THAT much. With everything going on between these countries, people are starting to think the Cold War has started up again. What do you think?
If you would like to read more about the current situation with the reappearing Cold War take a look at the link here. The Hunt for Red October is about a missile sub named the Red October that USSR has, that the U.S. wants. The book follows some CIA agents and their pursuit to find the Red October, while the crew of the Red October tries their hardest to hide the ship from the United States' grasp. on page 43 it shows how much the Soviet Union wants and needs to hide the ship:
"'And what if they locate us?' Kamarov speculated. 'I doubt that even the Americans can find us when the caterpillar is operating . I am certain that our own submarines cannot. Comrades, I helped design this ship,' Ramius said. 'First we must accomplish the task at hand. An officer who looks to far ahead stumbles over his own boots.' 'they will be looking for us,' Borodin said. 'of course,' Ramius smiled, 'but they will not know where to look until it is too late. Our mission, comrades, is to avoid detection. And so we shall." During the time of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were competing with each other, and one of their most famous competitions was who had more nuclear bombs. Once either country had a bomb, they would set it off to show the other country 'Hey, we one more bomb than you'. In The Hunt for Red October, the U.S. is trying to get the missiles from the Red October to one up USSR. Since the book is in third person perspective, we get to see both sides of the conflict and their opinions on each country. During the Cold War, in the United States, most people hated the communism government the Soviet Union had, while the Soviet Union just plain out hated the U.S. Introduction
Someone who is being mentored is more likely to graduate from high school and enroll into post-secondary education. According to NC Mentoring Partnership in 2017, adults who were mentored as a child were:
We were interested in this issue because it's important for kids to do well early on, so they will do better later on in life. We want to help kids so they can reach their full potential and become who they want to be. There are kids who have the possibility to do great things but some need a mentor to show them that is possible and give them some encouragement. Working with kids is something we all really enjoy. It makes us happy to see them work hard and most importantly, smile! You should care about this issue because it helps today's youth grow into productive adults that will one day contribute to our community. It helps them improve their social skills, friendliness, and collaboration with others. The kids that need mentoring could have a great future, they just need someone to show them they can do it. They need inspiration and encouragement to lead them to become good learners and make good decisions. Mentoring will give kids a positive attitude towards the responsibilities they will have to take on one day. If we can help these children, every child will have a better and brighter future. The Issue Mentors are important especially to children who need a role model, someone to confide in, and to help with any personal and or academic problems they may have. One of the biggest issues with students for as long as school has been around is the fact that they think they aren’t smart simply because they’re behind. Having a mentor could really be beneficial to a child's self esteem. A modern day example of mentoring's impact, a woman named Elaine was mentored at an elementary school as a part of ‘Mentor: The National Mentoring Partnership’ and met a first grader named Christina. Elaine never had a daughter so Christina filled that daughter role for her, while also influencing her into becoming a confident, caring adult who now spends her time mentoring a young girl in the same way Elaine had done for her (Mentor: The National Mentoring Partnership 2017). Statistics from ‘Mentor: The National Mentoring Partnership’ show that out of the young adults who were at risk of falling off track in their education but received a mentor in the end are 130% more likely to hold a leadership position. If these organizations and afterschool programs stop, there would be a loss of great potential. And all of these students will feel like they have no potential or they’re misunderstood. But having a good mentor to support them helps pave the way for a successful future. But in North Carolina you don’t see mentoring really anymore because some children are embarrassed to have a mentor, especially the kids who need one the most. The Solution This is definitely something that we need to fix. In fact, it is something that many organizations are doing right now. Some examples of organizations in North Carolina are nc mentoring, bbs triangle, and YMCA programs. What these organizations do is mentor in some of the areas nearby and get others to help them and enroll in mentoring. They also give information on what a mentor is and the benefits of mentoring. These organizations help children in need of learning so that they can become successful later on in life. The YMCA program mentors kids and help kids in K-5. They help kids with college readiness and give enrichment activities to kids in middle school. Either way there are still children that are out there that we need to help. Without mentoring it can cause things like bigger classes in school, so it is helping teachers out too. Mentoring could also help children so that they will not drop out of school later on in life and help them so they will feel ready to go to college and pursue the career path they want to take. With the help of mentors these children could go on in life and be able to get a great education and go on to get a good job. If our plan works out, we can work together to ensure that children can get the knowledge that they need for later on in life and also help them build a better social life with others. It is not only us who think this to. On mentoring.org it talks about how mentoring relationships is not only for learning but for growth to. It is also important to help children that are struggling in school or if they are homeless, because they have more of a chance to repeat a grade or have developmental delays later on in life. Conclusion What we can do is go to help kids personally. We can split up into groups and help kids or a class. We were thinking of mentoring First and Second graders at Bugg Elementary. We would help them read or we would read to them. This is a good place to mentor at because Bugg Elementary is a low income elementary school, it’s one of Wake county's highest need elementary schools. It’s also a title 1 school, an elementary support model school, and are a academically low performing school. If we can not mentor at Bugg Elementary, we would mentor at Stough Elementary because they have many Chinese immigrants that don’t know English and need to taught how to read and write in English. For this project we would need volunteers. We would choose about 20 students from Martin including us to be volunteers. We would have to choose about 16 students in the Sharrington group come with us. The plan is we would leave for Bugg Elementary in cars with registered parent and teacher volunteers right when school starts (7:30 a.m.). Once we get to Bugg, we will split up into groups based on which classroom we are in and read to kids in the first grade classrooms. At about 9:30, we will finish up with the first graders and go read to the second grade classrooms. Then we would finish up with the second graders at about 11:00 and head back to the school. We would back at about lunch time and we would have the rest of our classes like normal. If our plan works out, we would work with the NC Mentoring Partnership program. These guidelines will show what steps need to be taken to become a mentor and work with NC Mentoring Partnership: Step 1: Decide which type of mentoring is best for you. Consider the time commitment, age of youth, location and setting that you would prefer. Step 2: Search our database and contact your local community’s volunteer office or school system to find programs to fit your needs and interests. Step 3: You are offering to make a substantial commitment of your time. Be thorough in investigating your options before you choose the program that best suits your needs. We suggest calling or emailing at least three programs for more information. Talk to the staff about their specific application and screening procedures and what type of training and support they offer to their volunteers. Don’t be discouraged if a program isn’t a good fit. There are many more youth needing mentors than there are volunteers, so keep looking. Step 4: Complete an application for your chosen program. After submitting the application you can expect to go through a screening process that will include an interview and background check, then you will receive training before you are matched and ready to meet your mentee. Be patient as this process may take several months. Mentoring programs seek to ensure the quality of their matches and are concerned with the well-being and safety of both the children and volunteers. Just remember, becoming a mentor is well worth the effort, so be persistent in your efforts to complete the process. *Since the public will not be participating in our project, please go to ncmentoring.com if you would like to be a mentor to a child and help make this issue known throughout North Carolina.* The main goal of our project is to give these kids the chance to get the education that they need to get the job they want in the future and live a happy life. We will know that we have achieved our goal when we see kids who come out with a better understanding of reading. We will also notice if they have motivation to work hard and they want to learn. If the kids come out smiling we have done our job. But I am also very witty, sarcastic, and is quite hilarious. My mom would describe me as hilarious but very forgetful. But my dad would describe me as a very cool, land back, and very funny chick. My friends would describe me as someone with a temper but also as someone who is very loyal and would do anything for them.
The definition of homelessness is the state of having no home. According to TalkPoverty.org, the Poverty rate in North Carolina is 16.4%. Homelessness can be happen for many different reasons. Sometimes it's not the persons fault. Sometimes it can be caused a mental illness and they can't get a job due to their illness. I choose this issue because, where I live, I see homeless people everyday and I feel absolutely terrible. It makes me feel so bad that these people don't have anywhere to go and have to sit outside and beg for money because they can't afford any food but, I think it makes me even more grateful for what I have. A way we can help is by raising money and collecting food and clothes. We can raise money by having bake sale that would go directly to homeless shelters in Raleigh like Raleigh Rescue Mission. We could also do a food and clothes drive that would go to homeless shelters like Raleigh Rescue Mission. Homelessness is terrible and it could happen to anyone at anytime including you. Let's fight to make these peoples lives better because they don't deserve to be out on the streets.
February 2, 2014, about 39,000 tons of coal ash was spilled into the Dan River in Eden, North Carolina. Coal ash spills are not an easy thing to clean. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), in July of the same year only 4,000 yards of the coal ash had actually been taken out of that river. Here's the thing about coal ash spills, if someone's drinking water comes from a river like Dan River, it is completely undrinkable. It is just as toxic as water that has been affected by fracking. Coal ash spills also effect the wildlife that lives in the river or uses the water as a drinking source. For fish it could get in it's gils and clogs them up so they can't breathe and die. Duke Energy has only just began to clean all the coal ash out of Dan River but do you want to help? The best way you could help is by taking a trip up to Eden, and cleaning the river and rehabilitating the wildlife that could potentially get killed by the coal ash. If you would like to learn more about the coal ash spill in Dan river, take a look at the link below.

Most people who migrated to the U.S. in this time period because America was known as the " Land of Opportunity." The U.S. had lots of money and had lots of jobs and not enough citizens to fill them. But most immigrants had a hard time getting jobs, which made it hard for them to get basic essentials like food, water, and shelter.
